First Public Demonstration of Quantum Entanglement in Slovenia

On April 16, 2025, as part of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Ljubljana hosted Slovenia’s first public demonstration of an experiment showcasing the violation of Bell’s inequalities using entangled photons. The event marked the 100th anniversary of quantum mechanics and was held under the European SiQUID project, which is developing Slovenia’s first quantum communication network.

By demonstrating the violation of Bell’s inequalities, scientists confirmed that quantum mechanics offers a more accurate description of the physical world than classical physics. They generated quantum-entangled photons—particles whose states remain linked regardless of the distance between them—a phenomenon Albert Einstein once referred to as “spooky action at a distance.”
