Quantum Computers, Nutella Toast, and Exploring the End of the Universe

Nov 26, 2025 | For curious, News

On 20 November 2025, the team at Radiosfera embraced the early morning mood with breakfast and tossed a slice of Nutella-covered bread into the air. The toast then found itself in the quantum world, where strange things began to happen, as the topic of the day was the operating principles of quantum computers.

Quantum technologies are often described as the next major breakthrough in technological development. Quantum computers, quantum simulators, quantum sensors and other applications of quantum principles in emerging technologies will enable entirely new capabilities that classical computers cannot achieve. They even allow us to simulate how one of the hypothetical ends of our universe, known by the unusual name “false vacuum decay”, might unfold.

These are among the phenomena studied by Dr. Jaka Vodeb from the Department of Complex Matter at the Jožef Stefan Institute. In Radiosfera, he explained how quantum computers operate and what gives them their remarkable power. You can listen to the recording (in Slovenian) at this link.
